About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Yellow Advanced is a major gameplay enhancement hack of the original Pokémon Yellow, designed to modernize Gen 1 mechanics while keeping the classic Kanto journey intact. The focus is on:

  • Massive moveset expansions
  • Higher difficulty
  • Battle balance improvements
  • Economy and item adjustments
  • Expanded encounters

This hack does not change the core story, but dramatically transforms how battles, training, and progression feel, making it play more like a hybrid between Gen 1 and later generations.

Story Overview

The main story of Pokémon Yellow remains the same:

You travel across Kanto, defeat Gym Leaders, stop Team Rocket, and challenge the Pokémon League. However, the journey is far more challenging and strategic due to enhanced trainer teams, improved AI matchups, and expanded Pokémon movepools.

Your Rival now starts with Dratini, significantly changing early and mid-game battles and adding long-term difficulty scaling.

Key Features

  • Massive Moveset Overhaul: Almost every Pokémon learns 1–3 extra moves at Level 1 plus many new level-up moves inspired by Egg Moves, Tutors, and future generations (over 553 new move additions total).
  • Modernized Move Power & Types: Classic Gen 1 moves have been rebalanced to match later generations (Karate Chop = Fighting, Gust = Flying, Dig/Fly power updated, etc.).
  • Higher Difficulty Trainer Battles: Gym Leaders, Rival, Elite Four, and many trainers use stronger teams, better movesets, more Pokémon, and evolved forms.
  • Expanded Wild Pokémon Distribution: Every Pokémon can be found in the wild somewhere, with new encounters across routes, caves, and water areas.
  • Economy Rebalance: Poké Balls, healing items, vitamins, and key items are cheaper, while rare items like Moon Stone and Ether now have proper shop values.
  • TM Accessibility System: All TMs can be purchased in various Kanto Poké Marts.
  • Game Corner Reward Rework: Pokémon, evolution items, and even Master Balls are available as prizes.
  • Stat & Move Balance Adjustments: Draining moves, jumping kicks, and other attacks are brought closer to Gen 7–8 balance values.
  • Legendary Level Rebalance: Snorlax, birds, and Mewtwo have adjusted levels to scale better with late-game progression.
  • Mew In-Game Trade Event: Mew is obtainable without glitches through a trade.
  • Geographic Enhancements: Routes are slightly expanded with decorative houses and environmental touches.
  • Dialogue Improvements: Many NPC lines now include themes about friendship and life lessons.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Some graphical inconsistencies may remain due to Gen 1 engine limits
  • Balance may feel very hard for casual players
  • Certain expanded moves may behave differently due to Gen 1 mechanics
  • No major game-breaking bugs reported in the final release

Frequently Asked Questions

No new species, but nearly every Pokémon has expanded movesets and battle roles.

Q3: Can I complete the Pokédex?
Yes. Every Pokémon is available in the wild somewhere.

Yes, through an in-game trade event.

The story stays the same, but dialogue has been improved and expanded.

Q8: Are moves updated to modern standards?
Many moves have power, typing, and balance adjusted to resemble later generations.

Q9: What’s the biggest change compared to original Yellow?
The complete movepool overhaul and dramatically stronger trainer teams.

How to Play

  • Obtain a clean English Pokémon Yellow ROM.
  • Use Lunar IPS (or similar IPS patcher).
  • Apply the Pokémon Yellow Advanced (Final) IPS patch.
  • Play on a GBC emulator or compatible hardware.

Because this hack increases difficulty, building well-balanced teams and using strategy is strongly recommended.
