About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Emerald Multiplayer, also widely known as Pokémon Quetzal, is a ROM hack of Pokémon Emerald created by TenmaRH that transforms the traditional single-player Pokémon experience into a shared multiplayer adventure.

The main focus of this hack is allowing multiple players to interact within the same game world. Players can battle, trade, and even cooperate during trainer battles. The hack supports both local and online multiplayer for up to four players, which is extremely rare for GBA ROM hacks.

Beyond multiplayer functionality, the game adds several quality-of-life improvements and customization options. Players can choose from dozens of starter Pokémon, select different playable characters from across the Pokémon series, adjust shiny rates, and enable features such as following Pokémon.

The goal of the project is to keep the familiar Hoenn adventure while turning it into a social experience where players can explore, battle, and progress together.

Key Features

  • Multiplayer Support (1–4 Players): The game allows local and online multiplayer for up to four players, enabling battles, trades, and cooperative gameplay within the same world.
  • Co-Op Trainer Battles: Players can fight trainers together in cooperative double battles, making the campaign playable as a team experience.
  • Player vs Player Battles: Individual, double, and multi battles can be initiated with other players from anywhere, allowing competitive play during the adventure.
  • Online Trading System: Pokémon can be traded directly with other players without needing external games or complicated link setups.
  • Large Starter Selection: Players can choose from 44 different starter Pokémon, giving much greater flexibility than the original game’s three starters.
  • Multiple Playable Characters: The game includes Brendan, May, Gold, Red, Ash, Gloria, and additional characters such as Elio, Lucas, Rei, Steven, Rocket Grunt, Magma Grunt, and Victor.
  • Following Pokémon System: Pokémon can follow the player in the overworld, giving the game a more modern Pokémon-style presentation.
  • Customizable Party Followers: Players can choose how many Pokémon accompany them visually, ranging from zero to six followers.
  • Expanded Pokémon Availability: All Generation 1–3 Pokémon are obtainable within the game without needing trades from other games, including legendary Pokémon.
  • HM Quality-of-Life Improvements: HMs can be used outside of battle without forcing Pokémon to learn the move, removing a major inconvenience from the original Emerald gameplay.
  • Customizable Shiny Rates: Players can modify shiny encounter odds, allowing both casual and challenge-style shiny hunting.
  • Spectator Mode: Players can watch other players’ battles in real time and sometimes join them during cooperative encounters.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Because the project is still in Alpha development, bugs and crashes can occasionally occur. The developers have released several fixes in version 0.8.4, including stability improvements and crash fixes.
