About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Super Gold 97 is a full-length ROM hack that answers a very specific question: what if the Spaceworld 1997 demo became a complete game?
Instead of just restoring unused content, this hack builds an entire playable experience around the demo’s assets, ideas, and direction. It recreates the look and feel of the prototype—sprites, UI, music, and mechanics—while expanding it into a full adventure with gyms, a league, and even postgame content.
Unlike smaller demo recreations, this is a complete game from start to finish, with additional original content layered on top to fill in the gaps left by the unfinished demo.
Story Overview
You play as a new trainer setting out on a journey to assist Professor Oak with Pokémon research, similar to the premise of the earliest games.
The adventure takes place across Nihon, a region inspired by the entirety of Japan, expanding beyond what was shown in the original demo. As you travel, you collect Gym Badges, battle trainers, and encounter Team Rocket, who are working on a machine that would give them dangerous control over Pokémon.
Your rival, Silver, is portrayed differently than in later official games—here, he’s more energetic and friendly, closer in personality to Barry from later generations.
The story is intentionally simple and faithful to what the demo might have become, focusing on exploration, progression, and classic Pokémon storytelling rather than heavy narrative complexity.
