About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Spice is a simple, exploration-focused ROM hack that prioritizes maps, atmosphere, and core gameplay over heavy feature additions.

The developer intentionally keeps the project minimalistic, avoiding overly complex systems in favor of a more classic Pokémon experience with a custom storyline and region. The main appeal lies in exploring the Orange Region, interacting with its characters, and progressing through a gem-based quest system.

It’s important to note that the hack is still in development, and some aspects—especially story and features—are not fully fleshed out yet.

Story Overview

The game takes place in the Orange Region, where balance is maintained through the power of eight mystical Gem Stones. Each Gem is protected by a powerful Master.

An evil team has begun targeting these Gems, attempting to steal their power for unknown but clearly dangerous purposes. As the player, your mission is to:

  • Travel across the Orange Region
  • Challenge the 8 Masters
  • Earn the Gems through battle
  • Track down the evil team when they steal Gems before you arrive

Some Gems will already be stolen when you reach certain locations, forcing you to hunt down enemy bases and fight through their ranks to recover them. The story is still being expanded, but the central conflict revolves around power, control, and the protection of the region’s core energy sources.

Key Features

  • Original Orange Region: Region built from custom mapping, focusing on immersive routes, towns, and environmental design.
  • Gem Master System: Progression revolves around defeating 8 powerful Masters who guard mystical Gems instead of standard badge-style structure.
  • Story-Based Gem Theft Events: Some Gems are stolen before you arrive, triggering story missions where you must locate and battle the evil team to recover them.
  • Day & Night System: Time of day changes the atmosphere and may influence encounters and the overall feel of exploration.
  • Exploration-Focused Design: The hack prioritizes map quality and world design over excessive mechanics, creating a classic adventure feel.
  • Gradual Story Expansion: The narrative develops further in later versions, with more events and interactions being added over time.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Early Alpha builds contain no battles or Pokémon, focusing only on map exploration.
  • Some areas and story events are unfinished in current versions.
  • Features and polish vary depending on whether you are playing the Alpha or Beta release.
