About This ROM Hack
Pokémon =) (Smiley Face) is a challenge-focused FireRed ROM hack designed to replicate the feel of Black 2 / White 2’s Challenge Mode, but within the classic Kanto experience.
This isn’t a flashy overhaul with new regions or fakemon—instead, it’s a refined, tougher version of vanilla FireRed, where nearly every aspect of gameplay is tuned for a more demanding experience. Trainer levels are increased, boss fights are more balanced, and team compositions are adjusted to feel more strategic.
The hack also introduces small but meaningful tweaks inspired by older versions like Japanese Blue, along with quality-of-life adjustments and restrictions that make the game feel more “classic” and less forgiving.
Key Features
- Challenge Mode Level Scaling for Trainers: All trainers have increased levels, starting at +1 above normal early-game values and scaling up to +4 by the time you reach the Elite Four.
- Rebalanced Gym Leader Teams: Gym Leaders use slightly altered teams designed to feel more like true boss fights rather than standard campaign trainers.
- Appropriately Leveled Gym Leaders: Gym Leader levels are adjusted to match the intensity expected from major story battles.
- Rebalanced Elite Four Levels: The Elite Four are also scaled to be more in line with high-difficulty endgame encounters.
- Giovanni Level and Team Adjustments: Giovanni’s battles are tuned to match his status as a major antagonist and late-game boss.
- Brock’s Gym Encounter Change: Sandshrew no longer appears in Brock’s Gym.
- Koga’s Gym Type Correction: Psychic-type Pokémon are removed from Koga’s Gym to better match his Poison-type theme.
- Giovanni’s Gym Roster Cleanup: Arbok, Tauros, and the Machop evolution line are removed from Giovanni’s Gym team options.
- Sevii Islands Removed: The Sevii Islands do not exist in this hack, focusing the experience purely on Kanto.
- Moltres Relocated: Moltres can now be found in Victory Road instead of its original location.
- No National Dex Access: The National Pokédex is never obtained during the game.
- No Vs. Seeker: The Vs. Seeker item is completely removed, mirroring the limitations of the original Gen 1 games.
- Complete Kanto Pokédex Availability: You can complete the Kanto Pokédex in one playthrough, including eventually obtaining both fossils, all three Kanto starters, both Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, and multiple Eevee.
- Wild Pokémon Inspired by Japanese Blue Version: Wild encounters are edited loosely based on Japanese Blue, including Ditto in Rock Tunnel, Jynx in Seafoam Islands, and a Level 67 Clefairy in Cerulean Cave.
- In-Game Trades Partially Based on Japanese Blue: Some in-game trades mirror Japanese Blue, while others are changed to new custom trades.
- Quest Reminder Feature Removed: The in-game quest reminder system is removed.
- Trainer Class Name Change: The “Gamer” trainer class is renamed to “Gambler.”
- Emerald-Style Font: The in-game font is replaced with the Pokémon Emerald font.
- Ruby/Sapphire Pokémon Sprites: Pokémon use Ruby/Sapphire sprites instead of FireRed sprites, giving battles a different visual feel.
- Trade Evolutions Reworked: Graveler, Kadabra, Haunter, and Machoke now evolve through Happiness rather than trading.
