About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Retrieved FireRed is a unique blend of difficulty enhancement and quality-of-life improvements built on top of the classic FireRed experience. While the main storyline remains unchanged, the gameplay has been heavily modified to provide a more strategic and challenging journey through Kanto.

One of its standout aspects is the inclusion of scrapped Pokémon from the Gold/Silver beta, making it the first FireRed hack to integrate these lost designs into actual gameplay. Combined with a significantly expanded Pokédex, reworked trainer battles, and adjusted progression, the hack offers a fresh but familiar experience.

The game concludes after the second Elite Four battle, keeping the original structure intact while enhancing everything around it.

Key Features

  • Expanded Pokédex: Around 300 Pokémon are available, including the original 151, later evolutions and pre-evolutions, Gen 2 Kanto Pokémon, and numerous scrapped Pokémon from the GSC beta.
  • Scrapped Pokémon Integration: Rare and previously unused Pokémon designs like Gorochu and others are fully integrated into gameplay, complete with stats and encounter locations.
  • Balanced Pokémon Distribution: Each route features at least two new evolutionary lines, with stronger Pokémon appearing later in the game to maintain progression balance.
  • Custom Starters: Players can choose from Rinrin, Tigrette, and Wolfman, offering a completely different early-game experience.
  • Increased Difficulty Scaling: Wild Pokémon levels are raised by 5–10%, while trainer levels are increased by 10–20%, making battles more demanding.
  • Strategic Gym Leader Design: Gym Leaders use Pokémon based on egg groups instead of types, forcing players to rethink traditional type-based strategies.
  • Elite Four Playstyle Teams: Each Elite Four member specializes in a battle style (offense, defense, balance), creating more varied and tactical encounters.
  • Trainer Team Improvements: Many trainers have evolved Pokémon and expanded teams, reducing easy encounters and increasing challenge.
  • Battle Restrictions: Players cannot use bag items during battle, and the battle style is locked, increasing difficulty and requiring better planning.
  • Move and TM Overhaul: TMs have been replaced with stronger and more relevant moves like Moonblast, Thunder Punch, and Dragon Pulse.
  • Ability and Move Updates: Modern moves and abilities from Leon’s ROM base are included, improving overall battle depth.
  • No Trade Evolutions: All trade evolutions are replaced with alternative methods, ensuring full completion without trading.
  • Stat Rebalancing: Weaker Pokémon receive base stat boosts (typically +5 to +35) to improve viability.
  • Accessible Items: Evolution stones and TMs are purchasable in Celadon City, and EV items are significantly cheaper.
  • Full Pre-Elite Four Completion: All non-legendary Pokémon can be obtained before facing the Elite Four.

Known Bugs & Issues

The hack has several known issues. The Pokédex is currently bugged, requiring external references to track Pokémon locations. Some sprites for scrapped Pokémon are unfinished or low quality, and these Pokémon may lack proper icons.

There are also minor inconsistencies due to the integration of custom content. Overall, while playable, the hack lacks full polish and may contain additional undocumented bugs.
