About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Ragnarök is a cancelled FireRed ROM hack that was in development for around three years before being officially discontinued. The developer released the final patch publicly, allowing others to explore, study, or reuse its content freely with credit.

The project originally began under the name Pokémon Infinity before evolving into a more ambitious concept based on Norse mythology and apocalyptic themes. The hack attempts to combine traditional Pokémon structure with a darker narrative involving prophecy, ancient forces, and a collapsing world.

What makes Ragnarök notable is its attempt at building a multi-chapter detective-style Pokémon story, rather than a simple badge journey. The developer clearly aimed for a more structured narrative with defined arcs, missions, and character-driven storytelling, even if the execution remained incomplete due to cancellation.

Story Overview

The world faces an impending catastrophe foretold by ancient prophecy. When the Green and Black Dragon unleashes its fury, life and death, past and future, and even existence itself are consumed by flames in an event known as Ragnarök. Entire worlds—Anctgard and Nezgard—are destined to collide, erasing any remaining hope of light.

In the present, the Nezgard Region is shaken by the rise of a criminal organization known as The Exxa Brotherhood, responsible for coordinated attacks against the Pokémon League. In response, the League’s president contacts the elite detective organization A.P.I.C. (Agency of Pokémon Investigation and Criminology) to uncover the truth.

The investigation quickly takes a dark turn when three high-ranking APIC detectives vanish without a trace. Suspecting corruption within the Gym system itself, APIC makes a bold decision: send three of its most talented young students undercover to investigate the Gym Leaders, dismantle the Exxa Brotherhood, and uncover the mastermind behind the attacks.

The player follows a chapter-based storyline spanning 14 narrative chapters, uncovering conspiracies, personal tragedies, and the looming threat of Ragnarök itself.

Key Features

  • Chapter-Based Mission Structure: The main story unfolds across 14 chapters focused on investigations, missions, and side quests rather than linear Gym progression.
  • Original Nezgard Region: A fully new, cold and atmospheric region with a distinct identity and visual style.
  • Secondary Gym System: Eight Gyms and a Pokémon League exist but are not the primary focus of the game.
  • Preset Main Characters: Story-driven protagonists with fixed names to preserve narrative consistency.
  • Strong Narrative and Dialogue: Emphasis on well-written dialogue, character backgrounds, and plot cohesion.
  • Unique NPC Personalities: Important characters feature defined personalities and personal story arcs instead of generic roles.
  • Expanded Pokédex: A roster of 200 Pokémon from multiple generations with no Fakémon included.
  • Mega Evolutions and Primal Reversions: Includes Mega Pokémon and Primal forms, featuring previously unseen Mega designs.
  • Day and Night System: Time-based world changes with illuminated tiles, altered events, and wild Pokémon encounters.
  • Modern Battle Mechanics: Physical/Special split, Fairy type, new moves, updated berry system, and mechanics inspired by Generations 4–6.
  • Custom and Remixed Music: Soundtracks sourced from other games alongside custom music selections.

Known Bugs & Issues

As an abandoned ROM hack, Pokémon Ragnarök is incomplete and may contain unresolved bugs, unfinished story content, and balance issues. Certain chapters, events, or mechanics may not function as originally intended, and no official updates or fixes are expected.
