About This ROM Hack
Pokemon Professor Oak’s Back Up is a FireRed ROM hack that takes a very different approach to the Pokémon formula. Instead of becoming a trainer, gym challenger, or League competitor, you play as a young scientist working under Professor Oak.
You are not collecting badges or completing the Pokédex in the traditional sense. Instead, the focus is on research, field work, and narrative-driven progression across the Sevii Islands.
The hack builds its identity around being a role-based Pokémon experience, where you’re part of Oak’s research team rather than a traveling trainer. This gives the game a more grounded and story-focused tone compared to standard Pokémon adventures.
Despite some technical limitations and placeholder assets, the overall design leans heavily into story immersion and exploration of a different side of the Pokémon world.
Story Overview
You play as Aidan, a young and talented scientist working in Professor Oak’s Lab in Pallet Town. Unlike most protagonists, Aidan does not begin his journey as a Pokémon Trainer, but as a researcher devoted to Pokémon science.
One day, Professor Oak asks Aidan to travel to the Sevii Islands to retrieve another lab aide, Adrienne, who has been away on an assignment longer than expected. Known for her relaxed and troublesome attitude, Adrienne’s absence worries Oak just enough to send Aidan after her.
Armed with one of three Sinnoh-region starter Pokémon, Aidan embarks on an unexpected journey that gradually reveals more about the Sevii Islands, Pokémon research, and his own role in the Pokémon world.
In terms of timeline, the story is set two years after GSC/HGSS, and five years after RBY/FRLG, firmly grounding it within established Pokémon lore.
