About This ROM Hack

Pokemon Pinball Generations is a fan expansion of the original Pokémon Pinball for the Game Boy Color, designed to significantly extend the experience by introducing Johto region content and mechanics inspired by later generations.

Unlike a simple visual mod, this project focuses on expanding the core gameplay loop with new boards, Pokémon, and systems while still preserving the arcade-style pinball foundation.

The hack is also notable for being featured in the Twitch Plays Pokémon (TPP) community, which helped bring attention to its development and experimental design direction.

Overall, it aims to feel like a natural “second era” of Pokémon Pinball, bridging Kanto gameplay with a fully realized Johto experience.

Story Overview

Pokémon Pinball Generations does not follow a traditional Pokémon RPG storyline. Instead, progression is tied to pinball fields, map travel, and Pokémon collection.

Players begin with classic Red and Blue-style pinball boards and later unlock Gold and Silver fields, allowing travel across Johto locations. The goal is to capture Pokémon, complete the Pokédex, and explore new pinball mechanics inspired by Pokémon Gold & Silver.

Key Features

  • Complete Johto Pokédex: All 251 Pokémon from Kanto and Johto are obtainable within the game.
  • Gold & Silver Fields: New pinball boards themed after Pokémon Gold and Silver, expanding the original Red and Blue fields.
  • Smooth 60 FPS Gameplay: Performance improvements eliminate the slowdown present in the original Pokémon Pinball.
  • Johto Map Travel: Players can travel to Johto locations directly from the Gold and Silver pinball fields.
  • New Breeding Mode: A unique breeding mechanic added specifically to the Gold and Silver fields.
  • GS Ball Integration: The GS Ball appears on Gold and Silver fields, tying into Johto-era lore.
  • Twitch Plays Pokémon Tested: Designed and balanced for extreme, long-duration gameplay.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Some Gold and Silver fields are still reskins of Red/Blue fields rather than fully unique layouts
  • Future-generation Pokémon (Gen 3+) are not yet implemented
  • Some bonus stages are planned but not yet available
