About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Perfect Red & Blue is a vanilla-plus enhancement hack designed for players who want to relive the original Generation I experience with carefully selected quality-of-life improvements. The goal of the project is not to reinvent Pokémon Red and Blue, but to refine them, fixing long-standing bugs, improving AI behavior, enhancing sprites, and adding convenience features—while fully preserving the core mechanics, balance, and nostalgia of the originals.

This hack is 100% playable from start to finish, hardware-compatible with original Game Boy systems, and intentionally avoids radical mechanical changes. It is ideal for purists who want a “definitive” Gen 1 experience without exploits, broken AI, or ugly sprites.

Story Overview

The story remains identical to Pokémon Red & Blue. You begin your journey in Pallet Town, challenge the eight Kanto Gyms, dismantle Team Rocket, and face the Elite Four to become Pokémon Champion.

No narrative changes are introduced; instead, the focus is on mechanical polish and visual refinement, ensuring the classic journey feels smoother, fairer, and more complete.

Key Features

  • Enhanced Front & Back Sprites: Carefully curated sprites sourced from Pokémon Green, Beta Gold & Silver, and Space World assets to maintain nostalgia while removing poorly aged visuals.
  • Improved Battle AI: Trainer AI has been fixed to prevent incorrect switching behavior, with Gym Leaders and Elite Four now using Hyper Potions instead of Super Potions.
  • Gender Selection: Players can choose between a male or female protagonist, a feature absent from the original games.
  • Trade Evolutions Removed: Pokémon such as Kadabra now evolve by level (e.g., Alakazam at level 46), allowing full completion without trading.
  • All 151 Pokémon Obtainable: Every Pokémon is catchable in-game, while still preserving the version differences between Red and Blue through encounter rarity.
  • Mew Event Added: After registering 150 Pokémon and receiving the certificate, Mew can appear near Mewtwo with a 1% encounter rate at level 70.
  • Move Deleter & Relearner: Both services are available in Saffron City, adding modern convenience while staying Gen 1–legal.
  • TM Accessibility Improvements: TMs can be purchased after Celadon City, with corrected Mart inventories.
  • Bug & Glitch Fixes: Major Gen 1 glitches, including surfing bugs, NPC sprite issues, and Hall of Fame errors, have been fixed.
  • Yellow Version Adjustments: Certain Gym Leader teams and levels (Koga, Sabrina, Blaine) are adjusted to better match Pokémon Yellow.
  • Gen 1–Legal Learnset Tweaks: Minor adjustments improve usability without breaking Generation I mechanics, including Yellow-version move integration.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • No major known issues in v1.5
  • Minor quirks inherent to Generation I mechanics remain intentionally intact
  • Compatibility with Pokémon Stadium 1 & 2 is possible but not guaranteed
