About This ROM Hack

Pokémon OrangeSun is a FireRed ROM hack that directly adapts the second season of the Pokémon anime: Adventures in the Orange Islands into a playable GBA experience. Instead of being a loose inspiration, it follows episode-based storytelling and recreates key anime events in game form.

The hack focuses heavily on story immersion and anime accuracy, bringing together familiar characters like Misty and Tracey, alongside classic Orange Archipelago locations and events. It aims to feel like playing through the anime itself, rather than just a standard Pokémon journey.

A key design goal is to combine story progression + exploration across islands, supported by custom maps, music, and scripted events.

Story Overview

Professor Oak assigns you a special mission: retrieve and deliver the mysterious GS Ball from the Orange Archipelago. Your journey begins when you obtain the GS Ball from Professor Ivy, but things quickly go wrong as Team Rocket interferes, causing you to crash-land on Tangelo Island.

Stranded in the Orange Archipelago, you discover that the region has its own Gyms and Pokémon League. Determined not to turn back, you decide to challenge the Orange Cup. Along the way, you are joined by Tracey, and together with Misty, you travel across the islands, reliving iconic moments from the anime, encountering familiar characters, and participating in story events inspired directly by individual episodes.

The hack also includes a special storyline inspired by the Pokémon: The Power of One movie, further expanding the narrative scope.

Key Features

  • Anime-Based Story Events: Major story progression follows events from the Orange Islands anime arc, recreating scenes and episode narratives.
  • Episode Recreation: Specific episodes such as Scare in the Air, Pokéball Peril, and The Lost Lapras are fully adapted into playable in-game events.
  • Custom Maps and Tilemaps: Newly designed maps and tile edits create a distinct tropical and island-based atmosphere.
  • New Sprites: Custom overworld and character sprites bring anime characters and environments to life.
  • Day and Night System: A functional day/night cycle changes the world’s atmosphere and immersion.
  • Custom Music: High-quality custom music tracks are used instead of standard 8-bit audio, including anime opening themes.
