About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Opti-Y is a 2018 hack of Yellow that asks a straightforward question: what would this game look like if it were actually balanced?
Yellow was a landmark release, but by modern standards, its mechanics show their age — uneven stats, poor move distribution, and a limited pool of viable Pokémon make it hard to revisit without frustration. Opti-Y keeps the old-school feel and simplicity intact while fixing the parts that don't hold up.
All 151 Pokémon are obtainable without trade requirements, underpowered Pokémon have had their stats and typings adjusted, movesets have been expanded with moves from later generations, and opponent teams are smarter and more varied. It doesn't go as far as adding the Physical/Special split or full modern mechanics — the Gen 1 feel is deliberately preserved — but the changes it does make are meaningful enough to shift how the game plays.
It's a clean, focused hack. If you want the nostalgia of Yellow with more to think about and fewer reasons to soft reset out of frustration, this covers it well.
Key Features
- All 151 Pokémon Obtainable: Every Generation I Pokémon can be obtained without trading. Some are available through in-game trades or special methods, and all Pokémon can evolve to their final forms naturally. Even Pikachu evolves by level.
- Optimized Pokémon Stats and Typings: Many Pokémon have had their stats rearranged or boosted moderately to improve viability. Some typings were changed for balance or thematic sense, such as Kingler becoming Water/Ground, Ninetales becoming Fire/Ghost, and Golduck finally gaining the Psychic type.
- Expanded and Improved Movepools: Numerous Pokémon learn new and more fitting moves and TMs, making previously useless Pokémon like Farfetch’d and Porygon genuinely viable choices.
- New Attacks and TM Reworks: 23 moves from later generations were added or replaced unused Gen 1 moves, including Megahorn, Sludge Bomb, Brick Break, Drill Run, Air Slash, Nasty Plot, and Outrage. 30 existing moves were rebalanced, such as Gust becoming Flying-type and Rock Slide gaining improved accuracy.
- Improved TM Availability: 19 TMs were changed, and most useful TMs can now be purchased in shops, reducing reliance on one-time items.
- Higher Difficulty and Smarter Trainers: Enemy trainers use stronger, higher-level, and fully evolved Pokémon. Team Rocket now uses a much wider variety of stolen Pokémon, and boss fights feature larger teams with curated movesets.
- Updated Type Matchups: Several Gen 1 type interactions were corrected, such as Bug no longer being weak to Poison.
- Gameplay Quality Improvements: Includes new Celadon Game Corner prizes, new in-game trades, and purchasable items like PP Up (at high cost).
Known Bugs & Issues
- Pokémon stats may display incorrectly immediately after evolution
- Stats correct themselves after leveling up or depositing the Pokémon into the PC
- No other major bugs are currently reported
