About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Neon Blue is a heavily expanded FireRed ROM hack set in a completely new region starting from Eon Town. The hack focuses on a mix of story progression, exploration, and progression gating through HMs and story events, rather than pure open-world freedom.

The developer built this hack over multiple years, gradually adding systems, scripting improvements, and custom mechanics. While it still retains the core FireRed structure, it introduces a much more event-driven and interconnected world, where NPC hints, required backtracking, and item-based progression are important parts of gameplay.

A major part of the experience is the dense legendary distribution system, where many legendary Pokémon are hidden behind puzzles, post-game triggers, or environmental interactions.

Overall, Neon Blue feels like a classic FireRed foundation rebuilt into a larger, more complex adventure with strong progression design and exploration focus.

Story Overview

You begin your journey in Eon Town, located in a brand-new region. After being called to the lab by your sibling, you receive your first Pokémon and set out to become a top trainer. However, your journey is far from peaceful.

Throughout the game, you repeatedly encounter Team Rocket grunts, who interfere with your progress at key moments. Alongside them, you face multiple rivals: friendly rivals May and Brendan, as well as Denzel, a more hostile and persistent antagonist.

Professor Cornel plays a central role in guiding the player, offering crucial hints that are often required to progress. HM usage is mandatory in certain areas, and their locations are intentionally integrated into the story and environment rather than handed out freely. Exploration, backtracking, and preparation are essential elements of the Neon Blue experience.
