About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Green Rescue Team started as a simple “third version” concept—aiming to unify both Red and Blue Rescue Team into one improved experience. However, over time, the project evolved far beyond that initial idea.

What began as a quality-of-life-focused enhancement quickly transformed into a full difficulty overhaul with mechanical changes. The developer pushed into deeper territory, experimenting with hex editing, gameplay balance, and system-level tweaks, resulting in a much more demanding and refreshed version of the original game.

The hack keeps the core identity and story intact, but layers it with reworked dungeons, expanded Pokémon viability, and modernized mechanics, making it feel like a tougher, more strategic version of the classic.

If you’re expecting a simple tweak hack, this isn’t that anymore. It’s a challenge-focused reinterpretation of Red Rescue Team.

Key Features

  • Dungeon Overhauls: Most dungeons have been changed in some way, including new names, altered Pokémon encounters, music changes, second-half dungeon variations, and functional behavior tweaks.
  • Increased Difficulty Curve: Enemy Pokémon levels are significantly higher across the game, with Tiny Woods starting at Level 5 and Sky Tower reaching a minimum of Level 25. Post-game dungeons rarely dip below Level 30.
  • Expanded Party Size: All main story dungeons allow you to bring up to four Pokémon, offering strategic flexibility while compensating for increased difficulty.
  • Ability Expansion: Pokémon that originally lacked a second ability now have one, drawing from hidden abilities, later-generation abilities, or newly designed abilities that suit their roles.
  • Type Rebalancing: Numerous Pokémon have received new typings to improve balance and variety, such as Fire/Ground Typhlosion, Grass/Fire Sunflora, Water/Steel Blastoise, and Rock/Electric Nosepass.
  • Munchlax Integration: Munchlax is fully recruitable with proper stats, ability, evolution method, and Friend Area placement. Due to engine limitations, it has no usable move pool, making it feel like a unique Gen 3-style Pokémon and a completionist trophy.
  • Friend Area Rework: Friend Areas have been renamed to match Rescue Team DX naming conventions. All Friend Areas are purchasable from the start, except Legendary-exclusive areas and Darkness Ridge. Prices have been adjusted accordingly.
  • Universal Recruitment: All Pokémon can be recruited directly, removing evolution-only exclusivity while still encouraging evolution for optimal movesets.
  • Purity Forest Recruitment Enabled: Pokémon can now be recruited in Purity Forest, making the dungeon more tolerable while preserving its reputation as the ultimate challenge.
  • No Version Exclusives: All version-exclusive Pokémon have been unified into a single experience.
  • DLC Dungeon Changes: Oddity Cave, Marvelous Sea, Fantasy Strait, and Remains Island have all been altered, while their access codes remain functional.
  • Item Palette Updates: Many items have received palette swaps for clearer visual distinction and added polish.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Some details about bugs are not fully documented, so there may be undiscovered issues
  • Balance can feel extremely punishing, especially for casual players
  • Munchlax has a limited or non-functional movepool due to engine limitations
  • Certain advanced modifications (abilities, typings) may not behave perfectly in all cases
