About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Luola is an ambitious but ultimately cancelled ROM hack that attempted to reimagine the Pokémon world through a unique underground survival and exploration concept. Originally titled Cavern Adventures, the project was developed by a solo creator known as DOLCIEST, who openly described it as both a learning experience and a personal return to ROM hacking.
The hack is built on a heavily modified FireRed base using the “Artificial RED” patch, along with multiple third-party tools. From the beginning, the project was experimental, aiming to combine modern Pokémon mechanics with a drastically restructured world design.
Despite its ambition, the project was ultimately halted during Beta development and later cancelled in mid-2017. The creator shifted focus to new projects, leaving Luola as an incomplete but feature-rich snapshot of an evolving idea.
Story Overview
Your journey was supposed to begin normally, traveling across Kanto and Johto like countless trainers before you. However, upon stepping outside your home in Pallet Town, something feels terribly wrong. The world feels drained, lifeless, and broken.
You and your mother soon learn the horrifying truth: Team Rocket has launched devastating attacks on Viridian and Celadon City, resulting in massive loss of life and the displacement of thousands. With the region deemed unsafe, the population is forced into a large-scale underground evacuation.
Now living beneath the surface, you refuse to let the darkness stop your adventure. Beneath Kanto lies an expansive underground world known as Kanto Nine, along with another region called Erthena. Though buried below the surface, these regions are far from empty, and your journey becomes one of exploration, survival, and discovery in a world without sunlight.
Key Features
- Dual Region Concept (Kanto Nine & Erthena): A large-scale world split between an underground Kanto-inspired region and a secondary surface-connected region, offering a layered exploration structure.
- Underground World Design: The main setting takes place in a vast subterranean network created after catastrophic events, redefining how traditional Pokémon regions are structured.
- No Traditional Gyms: Instead of Gyms, the game uses “Challenge Centers,” which function as alternative progression points with a different structure than standard Pokémon battles.
- Expanded Pokémon Availability (Gen I–VI): Pokémon from multiple generations are included, significantly expanding team-building variety.
- Modern Battle Mechanics: Includes Physical/Special split, Fairy type, new moves, and other updated systems integrated into FireRed.
- Quality-of-Life Improvements: Features such as reusable TMs, forgettable HMs, indoor running, and Day/Night cycle enhance gameplay flow.
- Hidden Grotto System: Secret paths and hidden areas encourage exploration throughout the underground environment.
- Regional Variation and Exploration Focus: The game emphasizes exploration over linear progression, with multiple interconnected environments and climates.
- Custom Progression Structure: Progress is divided across multiple beta segments rather than a traditional complete storyline.

- Some areas and systems were incomplete or placeholder content during development
- Saving is unstable in caves, cities, and hills due to map modification risks
- General beta instability and unfinished regions across later planned areas
- Balance issues due to incomplete trainer and progression design
