About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Liquid Ocean is one of the most iconic early ROM hacks in the community, even winning Hack of the Year (HotY) in 2006. Developed primarily by Christos and later supported by Matt NG, this project aimed to push the limits of what was possible during the early days of ROM hacking.
Originally built on the Pokémon Emerald engine, the hack faced technical limitations and glitches that forced a complete restart. The development team then transitioned to the more stable Pokémon FireRed (BPRE) engine, essentially rebuilding the project from scratch. This decision reflects the ambition behind the hack—prioritizing quality and stability over rushing development.
Despite being in a pre-alpha stage, Pokémon Liquid Ocean already showcased impressive features for its time, including custom mapping, a unique region, new scripts, and creative systems like radio-based gameplay. However, due to its age and development stage, much of the content remains either incomplete or experimental, and some features may not be fully implemented.
Overall, this hack represents a piece of ROM hacking history—less about polish and more about innovation and influence.
Story Overview
Your journey begins in the quiet hometown of Enzo, located in the Legian area of the beautiful Soala Region. One day, you and your neighbor May head toward a nearby route when you discover a mysterious bag hidden in the tall grass. Before you can investigate further, wild Pokémon attack.
Inside the bag are two Poké Balls. In a moment of instinct, both you and May choose a Pokémon and defend yourselves. Shortly after, Daisy Oak, now researching Pokémon species in the Soala region, arrives and takes you both to her laboratory. She allows you to keep the Pokémon you chose, officially beginning your journey as a Pokémon Trainer.
As the story unfolds, you will encounter new characters, unfamiliar challenges, redesigned gyms, and an entirely new Elite Four, all deeply connected to the region’s mysteries and the ocean-themed atmosphere that defines Soala.
