About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Hyetology is a heavily story-driven Pokémon FireRed ROM hack that deliberately breaks away from traditional Pokémon game structures. It avoids common series conventions such as legendary Pokémon quests, introductory professors, and tutorial-heavy openings, instead focusing on atmosphere, mystery, and moral ambiguity.

The hack emphasizes darker subject matter, including crime scenes, societal division, and the unexplained deaths of Pokémon. While gameplay information outside of story and presentation is limited, the project positions itself as a narrative-first experience rather than a mechanical overhaul.

Some gameplay systems, balance details, and completion status are not clearly documented.

Story Overview

Pokémon Hyetology takes place in the Scimetri nation, spanning two major regions: Angelos and Gotham, an area known for producing exceptionally strong Pokémon Trainers.

The Angelos region is divided into three distinct biomes that also represent three different social classes. These divisions are reflected visually through unique tilesets and environmental design. In contrast, the Gotham region features a more stable environment and is portrayed as higher-class, resulting in less visual and social disparity.

The story begins with a global announcement from Black Mesa, a powerful worldwide organization, which introduces a new product called Zydrate, advertised as a painkiller for Pokémon. The drug quickly becomes widespread and commercially successful.

At the same time, the International Police is secretly investigating the mysterious deaths of Pokémon occurring across the world. Though initially hidden from the public, rumors begin to spread. Public opinion becomes divided—some believe the deaths are beneficial, while others are deeply disturbed.

You begin your journey on the day you set out to become the Champion, competing with many others who share the same ambition. One of them is Fatal, your arrogant neighbor and persistent rival.

The tone shifts dramatically when you step outside and discover a crime scene involving four dead Pokémon and a man. The man introduces himself as Cole Phelps, an investigator working on the Pokémon death cases within the Scimetri nation. He asks for your cooperation in the investigation, warning you to keep the matter secret.

From there, the game blends the traditional Pokémon journey with a covert investigation into corruption, morality, and the consequences of unchecked power.
