About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Fire Yellow is a fan-made remake of the original Pokémon Yellow, using FireRed as a base. Its primary feature is a follow-me Pikachu system, where Pikachu accompanies the player from the start, preserving the nostalgia of the original game while modernizing some gameplay mechanics.

The hack is open-world, allowing the player to take badges in almost any order, traverse Johto early, and experiment with gameplay mechanics such as activating same-levels mode, increased shiny rates, and modernized movesets. Although incomplete, the game allows a basic playthrough through Kanto, including partial events and Gym Leader encounters.

Story Overview

The story largely mirrors Pokémon Yellow, with a few additional events:

  • Pikachu is your first Pokémon and follows you everywhere.
  • You receive your Pokédex from Professor Oak while he is off hunting Clefairy.
  • Rival encounters with Gary are included, as well as interactions with Team Rocket.
  • Partial storylines include Mt. Moon events, Game Corner, and Museum side events with Brock.
  • Early Johto content is present, though not fully implemented.
  • Some legendary Pokémon and major plot events are teased but not fully accessible.

Despite these additions, the full Kanto-Johto narrative, Pokémon League postgame, and legendary encounters are still incomplete.

Key Features

  • Following Pikachu/Raichu: Pikachu follows the player and builds friendship over time.
  • Open World: Go anywhere in Kanto (and partially Johto) without HM restrictions.
  • Modern Mechanics: Fairy type, physical/special split, updated moves, and some stat adjustments.
  • Shiny Chance Increase: Slightly higher shiny rates for Pokémon.
  • Kanto/Johto Pokémon: Some Hoenn Pokémon are added to Kanto, starters obtainable through events.
  • Same-levels Mode: Trainer Pokémon levels can be set to match the player’s highest level.
  • Wild Pokémon Adjustments: Pikachu removed from wild, Pidgeotto restored in Viridian Forest.
  • Surf Flexibility: Surf can be used without badges or HMs; Pikachu sprite temporarily hidden.
  • Partial Johto Integration: 1 gym and wild Johto Pokémon included for exploration.
  • Bug Fixes for Follow-Me: Pikachu occasionally glitches but respawns in nearby areas or Pokémon Centers.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Follow-Me Glitches: Pikachu may face the wrong way, temporarily turn into Jigglypuff, or appear multiple times.
  • Movement Issues: Pikachu can walk through walls (intentional), sometimes causing minor pathing issues.
  • Trainer Battles as Pokémon: Transformations (e.g., Pikachu) may mess with opposing trainer sprites temporarily.
  • Incomplete Events: Some storylines, like Johto gyms, legendaries, or full Team Rocket plot, are unfinished.
  • Text Bugs: Some color inconsistencies in dialogue.
  • TM & Move Tutor Limitations: Only partial updates implemented; Dazzling Gleam added.
