About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Fire Red: Mega Edition is an ambitious hack of FireRed in development by its creator to include Mega Evolutions, post-game expansions, rare wild encounters, and a new storyline involving Mewtwo and the cloning program. While still in beta, this hack aims to completely overhaul Kanto and the Sevii Islands, adding new areas, weather effects, events, and story-driven post-game content.

The hack is notable for its extensive lore, custom maps, and ambitious gameplay systems like a real-time Day/Night system, starter Pokémon obtainable in multiple locations, and all-new challenges for Gym Leaders and the Elite Four.

Story Overview

Year: 1976, Guyana, South America

Scientists at the Cinnabar Research Center discover Mew, the genetic ancestor of all Pokémon. Attempts to clone Mew fail repeatedly, creating numerous Ditto and eventually a single viable clone: Mewtwo. After years of dormancy and experimentation, Mewtwo awakens, escapes, and becomes aware of his cloned nature. Fueled by betrayal and grief over the death of the girl and original clone Pokémon connected to him, he leaves his creators, leaving Mr. Fuji and Blaine behind, and retreats to Cerulean Cave.

Year: 1995, Kanto Region, Japan

The player begins as a young trainer in Pallet Town, receiving a starter Pokémon from Professor Oak: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. Your rival automatically chooses the type strong against yours. The journey through Kanto follows the classic Pokémon League challenge, but with major enhancements:

  • Expanded maps: Charicific Valley, Hidden Undergrowth, and Underground Lake for unique starter and rare Pokémon spawns.
  • New event locations for legendary Pokémon like Moltres in Cinnabar Volcano and Birth/Navel Islands.
  • Post-League training and secret missions, leading to encounters with top Pokémon Masters.

The story integrates Mega Evolutions, Johto/Hoenn Pokémon, and event Pokémon seamlessly into the gameplay experience.
