About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Fire Red Mega Edition is an early-stage hack with a clear central vision: take FireRed, build Mega Evolution into it for Gen I through III Pokémon, and reshape the narrative around Mewtwo in a way the original never explored.
The story angle is one of the more interesting parts of what's planned. Rather than the standard Kanto journey running in the background, the hack puts Mewtwo's creation and its consequences at the center of the narrative — giving the region's lore more weight and cinematic direction than FireRed ever attempted.
Beyond that, the world itself is being expanded. Wild encounters are being reworked to include Johto and Hoenn species, new areas are planned, legendary encounters are being redesigned, and the Sevii Islands are being built out with deeper lore connections — potentially linking back to Johto as well.
It's worth being clear about where this is at, though — the hack is still in early development, and the developer is openly building it with community contribution in mind. A lot of what's described is still in progress rather than implemented. The ambition is obvious, but this is a project to watch rather than a finished experience to dive into right now.
Story Overview
Scientists at the Cinnabar Research Center discover Mew, the genetic ancestor of all Pokémon. Attempts to clone Mew fail repeatedly, creating numerous Ditto and eventually a single viable clone: Mewtwo. After years of dormancy and experimentation, Mewtwo awakens, escapes, and becomes aware of his cloned nature. Fueled by betrayal and grief over the death of the girl and original clone Pokémon connected to him, he leaves his creators, leaving Mr. Fuji and Blaine behind, and retreats to Cerulean Cave.
Year: 1995, Kanto Region, JapanThe player begins as a young trainer in Pallet Town, receiving a starter Pokémon from Professor Oak: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle.
