About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Orange is a Pokémon Crystal ROM hack created by Pia Carrot. The project was designed to recreate the Orange Islands adventure inspired by the Pokémon anime while maintaining the classic gameplay structure used in official Game Freak titles.

Development originally began many years earlier after the creator played Pokémon Naranja on a cartridge and wanted to see a more complete and polished Orange Islands game. Since no large-scale hack of the region had been fully realized at the time, the developer started building one from scratch using Pokémon Crystal as the base.

The game eventually grew into one of the most well-known Orange Islands ROM hacks and even won Hack of the Year 2017 on PokéCommunity. The project introduced new islands, story events, mechanics, and Pokémon variations while still preserving the feel of the original second-generation Pokémon games.

Story Overview

Pokémon Orange takes place in the Orange Archipelago, a chain of tropical islands separate from the Kanto and Johto regions.

The player begins their adventure on Valencia Island, where they dream of becoming a Pokémon Master after hearing about the legendary trainer Red defeating the Indigo League six months earlier. Inspired by this story, the player decides to begin their own Pokémon journey across the Orange Islands.

Early in the adventure, the player is tasked with delivering a mysterious item known as the GS Ball to Professor Samson Oak, who is visiting the Orange Islands from the Alola region.

While exploring the islands, players take on the Orange Crew, a group of unique gym-style leaders who each test trainers with unconventional challenges. Along the way, the player encounters strange Pokémon variants, unusual island environments, and a group of eccentric villains causing trouble across the region.

The journey mixes lighthearted island exploration with classic Pokémon goals such as catching new Pokémon, battling trainers, and uncovering secrets hidden across the archipelago.

Key Features

  • Complete Orange Archipelago: Full Island Region. The game recreates the Orange Islands with numerous explorable islands and unique environments inspired by the anime.
  • Anime-Inspired Storyline: Narrative Based on the Orange Islands Arc. The game follows a story structure inspired by the Pokémon anime while presenting it in a traditional Game Freak-style RPG format.
  • New Pokémon Variants: Regional Forms and Unique Species. The game introduces Orange Island variants, Alolan forms, and special Pokémon such as Crystal Onix.
  • Pinkan Berry Mechanic: Anime-Inspired Item Feature. Pinkan Berries are included and function similarly to their anime counterpart from Pinkan Island.
  • Legendary Event: Movie-Inspired Story Encounter. A special event inspired by the 20th Pokémon movie features legendary Pokémon such as Ho-Oh and Marshadow.
  • New Exploration Mechanics: Additional Field Abilities. The hack introduces mechanics such as Dive and Rock Climb to expand exploration beyond the original Pokémon Crystal features.
  • Reusable TMs: Improved Move Learning System. Technical Machines can be used multiple times rather than disappearing after one use.
  • Modernized Pokémon Data: Updated Stats and Learnsets. Pokémon use base stats and learnsets updated to Generation 7 standards.
  • Quality-of-Life Items: Modern Gameplay Enhancements. The game includes features such as the Shiny Charm and Exp. All item to improve training efficiency.
  • New Pokémon Cries: Updated Audio Assets. Many Pokémon use improved sound effects rather than the original Generation 2 cries.
  • Clock Reset NPC: Flashcart Compatibility Feature. A special NPC allows players to reset the in-game clock if playing on flash cartridges or certain emulators.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Item Duplication Bug: Items may randomly duplicate in the player’s inventory. The issue is difficult to reproduce, so saving frequently is recommended.
  • Older Codebase Limitations: Because the project was built on an older Pokémon Crystal hacking framework, some systems are difficult to update or expand further.
