About This ROM Hack
Pokémon DarkViolet began development in 2012 as a bold remake of the original Generation I games. Unlike FireRed & LeafGreen, this project was designed as a full reboot — a “what if Gen I was remade from scratch” scenario with modern mechanics, a heavier story focus, and a very different tone.
Development ran from 2012 to 2014 before being canceled after Beta 2. Four years later, in 2018, HacksRepairman completed the remaining content. Chaos Rush (the original creator) returned to apply finishing touches, along with graphical updates from MrDollSteak. The result is the fully completed version available today.
The creator has openly described the writing as edgy and sometimes over-the-top, reflecting his younger mindset at the time. Even so, DarkViolet has built a strong fanbase and remains one of the more ambitious story-driven Kanto remakes ever made.
This is not FireRed with tweaks. It is a reimagined Generation I experience.
Story Overview
In Kanto, humans live alongside Pokémon in a world full of mystery and adventure. Some treat Pokémon as companions, others as partners in battle, and many are subjects of scientific research.
Three teenagers—Red, Green, and Blue—set out from Pallet Town and Viridian City to collect Gym Badges and challenge the Pokémon League. They each receive a Pokémon from Professor Oak and encounter allies, including Blue’s older sister Daisy.
Their journey also intersects with Kamon, a mysterious boy who claims to despise Team Rocket. Team Rocket itself poses an increasingly serious threat, working under the guise of a “Pokémon Research Organization.” As the story unfolds, the motives of Kamon, Team Rocket, and other key characters are gradually revealed.
Players will experience a reimagined Kanto, modern gameplay, and a storyline with multiple rival battles, expanded Team Rocket activity, and unexpected plot twists.
Key Features
- Complete Generation I Reboot: DarkViolet is fully re-scripted and re-mapped, creating a modern Kanto experience. Locations are redesigned for clarity, immersion, and updated route layouts inspired by HG/SS. Route 23 exists properly, and towns are more dynamic than in FireRed/LeafGreen.
- Expanded Kanto Dex – 210 Pokémon: Beyond the original 151, the hack includes Pokémon from Generations II–IV closely related to Gen I families (e.g., Crobat, Blissey, Politoed, Magmortar, Electivire, and all Eeveelutions), providing variety while maintaining a Generation I theme.
- DS-Style 64x64 Sprites: Every Pokémon has a 64x64 DS-style sprite, offering visually modernized designs with unique animations and personality while remaining GBA-compatible.
- 467 Total Moves & Expanded Mechanics: Includes 113 new moves (mostly Gen IV, a few Gen V, and custom moves), with no old moves removed. Physical/Special split, modern abilities, and new mechanics enhance battle depth on the GBA platform.
- Rebalanced Movesets: All 210 Pokémon have redesigned movesets based on modern logic, closely following Gen V movesets where applicable to ensure balance and viability.
- R/S/E-Style Features: Incorporates Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald-style presentation, including removal of first-person battle views and flashback features, proper item fanfares, and trainers facing the player before battles. Colored gender-based text was removed for clarity.
- Music Overhaul: Extensive soundtrack updates, with custom instruments such as church organs and “orchestra hit” samples. Key characters now have unique battle themes to enhance story immersion.
- Story-Driven Rival System: Kamon, Giovanni’s son, acts as a recurring rival with layered motives. Daisy and other characters provide deeper story engagement throughout the journey.
- New Gym Order & Expanded Antagonist Role: Gym order has been restructured, with a surprise Gym Leader replacing Giovanni, who now functions as the main antagonist with more depth and presence in the plot.
- Modernized Kanto Regions & Routes: Towns and routes redesigned for better gameplay flow and immersion. Maps are coherent, visually engaging, and optimized for exploration.
- Overhauled Mechanics & Quality-of-Life Improvements: Includes improved trainer AI, updated abilities, modern move animations, and enhanced battle mechanics, removing outdated FRLG limitations.
- Balanced Difficulty & Strategic Combat: Redesigned battles, movesets, and abilities provide challenging yet fair encounters. Gym Leaders, trainers, and postgame content encourage strategic play.
- Expanded Storyline & Character Development: Recurring rival battles, deeper character interactions, and expanded Team Rocket narrative enhance the RPG experience.
- High Replayability: With 210 Pokémon, new movesets, modern mechanics, and challenging battles, the hack encourages repeated playthroughs to explore hidden elements and rare Pokémon.
