About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Dark Graystone is a joke/parody ROM hack of Pokémon Gold created by Freako. Unlike traditional story-driven hacks, this project was intentionally designed to mislead, confuse, and troll players, using exploits, unexpected behavior, and altered progression.
The hack gained notoriety after AxmanAMV created a two-part Nuzlocke series based on it, which inspired Freako to use the exploit as a prank on friends. Its popularity later expanded when Joel from the Vinesauce community played the hack during a Pokémon ROM hack livestream in December 2016.
This hack is best experienced as a community meme and experimental curiosity, rather than a serious Pokémon adventure.
Story Overview
There is no traditional storyline in Pokémon Dark Graystone.
Instead, the hack intentionally subverts expectations, presenting itself as a normal Pokémon Gold experience before gradually revealing strange behavior, misleading events, and unusual mechanics designed to confuse or surprise the player.
Any perceived “story” is part of the joke.
