About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Dardusk is an early-stage ROM hack that takes the traditional Pokémon formula into a much darker and more mature direction. Set in a post-apocalyptic version of Kanto, the game introduces a world where both humans and Pokémon have returned from the dead as zombies.

Unlike standard Pokémon adventures, this hack focuses heavily on atmosphere, narrative tone, and survival elements. The developer aims to create a story-driven experience centered around Silver, Giovanni’s son, navigating a broken world filled with danger, mystery, and morally darker themes.

As of Alpha 0.1, the project is still in very early development, with only a small portion of the game currently playable. However, it already establishes the tone and core mechanics that set it apart from traditional Pokémon ROM hacks.

Story Overview

You play as Silver, the son of Giovanni, who awakens in a broken world overrun by zombie Pokémon and undead humans. With little understanding of how the apocalypse began, Silver must:

  • Survive the infected Kanto region
  • Discover the truth behind the zombie outbreak
  • Track down his missing father, Giovanni
  • Confront forces darker than the undead themselves

Badges are no longer earned through Gyms — they are scattered remnants of a fallen Pokémon League, found through exploration and survival.

Key Features

  • Post-Apocalyptic Kanto: The Kanto region reimagined as a ruined, zombie-infested wasteland
  • Playable Character – Silver: The story is centered entirely around Silver, Giovanni’s son
  • Zombie Pokémon & Humans: Undead creatures roam the world, inspired by survival-horror themes
  • Physical/Special Split: Modern battle mechanics for better balance
  • No Gym System: Badges are discovered throughout the world instead of earned from Gym Leaders
  • Scavenging System: Items and resources must be searched for rather than handed out
  • Fakémon Inclusion: A small number of custom Pokémon alongside Gen 1–3, with some Gen 4–6 additions planned
  • Adult Themes: Strong language, violence, and dark humor present (text-only)
  • Indoor Running: Ability to run inside buildings
  • New Maps: Entirely reworked locations to reflect the fallen world
  • New Music: Custom music tracks to enhance the horror atmosphere

Known Bugs & Issues

  • If all Pokémon faint, the default FireRed “mom ghost” dialogue may appear
  • Silver’s backsprite is incomplete (only 2 of 5 frames edited)
  • Using walk-through-walls cheats may reveal unchanged FireRed areas
  • Some maps and events are still unfinished due to alpha status
