About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Amnesia is a story-driven FireRed ROM hack developed by Hedgehogger, focusing heavily on events, scripts, and narrative progression rather than the traditional Gym-centric Pokémon formula.

Unlike many hacks of its era, Pokémon Amnesia experiments with spoken dialogue from the player character, long scripted sequences, and a darker, more emotional storyline. The project dates back to around 2010 and was released in beta form, remaining unfinished.

Due to its age, Pokémon Amnesia should be considered a historical ROM hack, showcasing early experimentation rather than a polished experience.

Story Overview

You are a 12-year-old prodigy Trainer from the Verde Region, already a Pokémon League Champion and widely respected. During a friendly battle with your rival, disaster strikes.

As your rival’s Dusclops attempts to use Curse, a mysterious meteorite crashes from the sky. In the chaos, the curse is accidentally placed on you. Your Pokémon sacrifices itself to protect you from the meteor’s impact, and you fall into a coma.

Five years later, you awaken with:

  • No memory of what happened
  • No Pokémon
  • No understanding of why you survived

Encouraged by a local doctor specializing in Pokémon research, you are sent back across the region you once conquered—both to recover your memories and assist with Pokédex research. Along the way, strange forces, unanswered questions, and forgotten truths begin to surface.

Key Features

  • 386 Pokémon available, covering the full Generation III National Dex
  • Story-first design, with emphasis on scripts and events rather than Gyms
  • Completely new region: the Verde Region
  • New Gym Leaders, trainers, and characters
  • Heavy use of custom scripting for story events
  • The player character speaks, an uncommon feature for its time
  • Modified color palettes for maps and environments
  • New trainer battles integrated into story progression

Gameplay Focus

Pokémon Amnesia intentionally shifts away from the traditional Pokémon structure:

  • Gyms and Pokédex completion are not the main focus
  • Progression is driven by story events and scripted sequences
  • Exploration and dialogue play a larger role than usual

This design choice makes the hack feel more like an interactive Pokémon narrative than a standard RPG challenge.

Known Bugs & Issues

As an unfinished beta, Pokémon Amnesia contains numerous known issues, including but not limited to:

  • Repeatable scripts (e.g., mother’s dialogue triggering multiple times)
  • Graphical glitches, including incorrect tiles and palettes
  • Crashes caused by interacting with certain signs
  • Softlocks in Gym areas under specific conditions
  • Unfinished sprites for key characters
  • Unedited title screen
  • Broken or inaccessible features such as the Tournament Hall
