About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Red/Blue Full Color is a Game Boy Color enhancement hack that fully colorizes the original Pokémon Red and Blue games while preserving their classic gameplay.

The project was originally started by FroggestSpirit, who completed the most difficult task: colorizing the entire overworld. Development was later continued and finalized by Drenn, who refined the visuals, fixed bugs, and expanded compatibility.

This hack offers a faithful Gen 1 experience, enhanced with vibrant colors and optional Generation 2-style graphics.

Story Overview

The goal of this hack is not to redesign Pokémon Red and Blue, but to present them as they might have originally appeared on the Game Boy Color, long before Pokémon Crystal existed.

Rather than remaking mechanics, the hack focuses on:

  • Visual clarity
  • Consistent palettes
  • Reduced flickering
  • Improved animations

Standard Full Color Version:

  • A pure colorization of Pokémon Red/Blue with original Gen 1-style graphics.
Gen 2 Graphics Patch Version:
  • Includes Danny-E 33’s Generation 2 Graphics Patch, updating Pokémon and trainer sprites to resemble Gold/Silver/Crystal visuals.

Key Features

  • Full Overworld Colorization: Every town, route, dungeon, and interior is fully colorized.
  • Battle Graphics in Color: Pokémon, menus, and animations display proper color palettes.
  • Optional Gen 2 Graphics: Choose a version that includes Gold/Silver-style sprites.
  • EXP Bar Added: Introduces a visible EXP bar similar to later generations.
  • Improved Battle Transitions: Reduced flickering when entering battles.
  • Recolored UI Elements: Menus, item screens, and textboxes are consistently colored.
  • Updated Animations: Trade, attack, Cut, and Safari Zone animations recolored and refined.
  • Gen 2 HP Threshold Logic: Yellow HP bar now appears below 50%, matching Gen 2 behavior.
  • Game Freak Intro Enhanced: Intro sequence fully colorized.
  • Blue Version Support: Dedicated patches for Pokémon Blue included.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • VBA emulator may display white screens due to palette lock issues
  • X Attack / X Defense animations may inherit previous move colors
  • Minor palette inconsistency when exiting west of Lavender Town
